Process

Testing

Machine Confirmation
- Check the machine model number and machine drawings to define the basic length (l), machine centre point and the type of the machine. This is used to define the hemisphere radius (r) of the hemispherical measurement surface according to “Annex A (normative) Basic length (l), and additional machine specifications” in ISO 6393:2008 and ISO 6395:2008. With the hemisphere radius (r) and basic length (l).
Weather Record
- Check the weather forecast on the testing date and location to ensure the test will be conducted in fine weather without snow or rain, and the wind velocity not exceeding 8m/s. The temperature should be within the range of – 10 °C and + 35 °C. Record humidity (%).

Microphone Positioning Set Up

Measure and check the basic length (l) of the machine on-site according to ISO 6393 Annex A and define the hemisphere radius (r) of the measurement surface according to Table 1.

Based on the defined hemisphere radius (r) of the hemispherical measurement surface, define the 6 measuring positions according to Table 2 and Fig 1.
For microphone position 5 and 6 at high level, an extension pole, telescopic mast, scissors lift, or cherry picker may be required to reach up to 15m above ground level. Ensure that the lifting facility is ready on-site.

Thiess needed to install exhaust sound suppression on their Liebherr R996 Excavators to meet the site noise limit of 118dB(A). The equipment could not operate on-site until noise levels were reduced to 116dB(A).
